The next Start Sailing course will be in April/ May 2009 - Watch this space
Midland Sailing Club is an RYA training centre and the ideal place to get into sailing, whether you are a complete beginner, or have some previous experience. We are an entirely voluntary members Club, and our qualified instructors do not get paid. We run training to introduce people to the sport in the hope that they will share our passion for sailing and continue to sail with us, and so we require that any trainees join, or are already members of Midland Sailing Club.
We will be offering a complete package of training, Club membership and boat hire that will enable you to quickly develop your new skills, build confidence, and maximize your enjoyment of your new sport.
The complete package includes:
- Start Sailing course
- Basic Skills course
- Full Club membership until 31st March 2010
- 6 sessions of boat hire during organised Club Sailing when there is safety boat cover.

Cost
Start Sailing 2 day course £TBA (includes 12 months membership)
The costs shown below are for 2008. These will be adjusted for next year
_______________________________________________________________________________________
The total cost for the package for adults is £250, giving a saving on the separate costs of the courses, adult membership (£138 plus £40 joining fee) and boat hire (6 x £10). The cost for Family members is £215 each and Students £190. Existing members, juniors please ask about rates.
If you are a total beginner we recommend that you do both the Start Sailing and Basic Skills courses. This will give you the skills that you need to sail in moderate conditions and will be the requirement of any establishment hiring sailing boats. If you do the Start Sailing course and decide sailing is not for you, then we will give you a refund so you will pay just £95.
If you have some sailing experience it may be possible for you to progress directly to the Basic Skills course, subject to our assessment of your existing level of competence. If you go straight to the Basic Skills course the cost of the Adult package will be £220.
If you are at all uncertain which path is right for you, please e-mail michael.colles@virgin.net or call 0121 472 4556 to discuss the options available. You will also be made most welcome to drop in to see us at the Club on Saturday afternoons or Wednesday evenings, but please ‘phone or e-mail beforehand so we can ensure there is someone expecting you.
What to Wear
We do not expect our trainees to have their own ‘sailing gear’. We provide you with a buoyancy aid and we have a limited selection of clean but “cast off” wetsuits, gloves, boots and spraytops which you are welcome to borrow for the duration of the course if you wish. Please bring warm and waterproof clothing with you. It is better to wear several thin layers of clothing than one thick layer. Denim jeans and cotton are not advisable, as when they get wet they are heavy and cold. A thin waterproof top layer will protect you from spray, rain (if it dares!) and more importantly the chill factor produced by the wind. If you have over-trousers they will help to keep your bottoms dry! As we lose most heat from the head, wearing a hat can improve you enjoyment immensely. Remember it is always colder on the water than off it and it is better to be too warm than cold. If you are cold and uncomfortable you will not enjoy yourself and will not learn! Trainers are suitable to wear on your feet but be warned, they will get wet.
You will find excellent advice about suitable clothing and all other aspects of getting into sailing in “the essential guide” available from Yachts and Yachting magazine.
