Cruising: The Big Boats

The Midland Sailing Club does not have a formal cruising section as such, but, despite the distance from the coast a number of members own yachts which provide crewing opportunities for fellow club member from time to time.

Currently four yachts are based in Plymouth, two at Chichester, one on the Isle of Wight and one in Ipswich. All are extensively used with voyages to France and across the North Sea to Holland taking place last season.

Boats include:

  • Pibbin II - a Moody 29 used for pottering around the Solent
  • Jules' 29 footer (Gibsea 213)

The skippers and their crews gather in the bar on Wednesday evenings and recount their adventures and raise the curiosity of others present as well as planning for work needed or the next cruise.  The Round the Island race is popular each year.

Within the West Midlands there are a number R.Y.A. approved teaching establishments for both Day Skipper and Yachtmaster theory classes. Club members instruct at two centres as well as examining on practical courses.

Any yachtsman visiting Birmingham is very welcome to visit the club on either a Saturday (17.00-19.00) or Wednesday (20.30-22.00) to enjoy a chat and a drink.  Tie up at the jetty.
