Support your flagpole
No it isn’t falling over, nor did it come down in the gales on 1st March. It was carefully lowered for checking its condition, refurbishing and to fit a new anemometer donated by Barbara Hopton.
What is its state of health after many years of neglect?
- The paintwork is peeling off
- The flag halyards are worn and hardened
- The saddle clips and shackles supporting the halyard blocks were 95% worn through
- The support frame is rusting and needs repainting
- An eye bolt is to be fixed to the base to facilitate raisin and lowering
However much loving care is spent in doing the work, we do need to cover the cost of materials for the refurbishment.
So
please support your flagpole.
Facts and figures
The flagpole was I am told a prototype and originally stood by the old starting box half way down the beach. The old supports are still there to be seen. When the new starting box was built in 19.. it was moved to its current position.
Since being re-sited we believe it has only been lowered once to replace the halyards many years ago.
It is made from 1/16th inch (1.5mm) galvanised steel sheet and rolled into 7 truncated conical sections. The yard arm is of aluminium tube and the capping on top is an aluminium casting. The bottom section is filled with concrete to provide a counter weight when raising and lowering.
- Height
- 12.7 metres (41ft 7in)
- Length of yardarm:
- 6.1 metres (20ft)
- Estimated weight:
- 1.10 tonnes (1.09 tons)
